Free People Velvet Dress

You guys know how much of a casual dresser I am so it’ll come as no surprise that I generally only like to buy party pieces that can work for me in different ways. Basically, if I can only wear it on a night out then it just isn’t going to happen!

When Free People contacted me about collaborating on a partywear piece I instantly knew that I wanted to share how you can moonlight your party dress as a cute skirt, top or layering piece! I actually have to admit that after styling it up in two different ways I prefer the casual look!

The Anytime Winter Dress

This velvet dress comes in a couple of different colours but obviously I had to go with pink. I also feel like lighter pastel colours are easier to mix in with your day wear and particularly for me, my whole wardrobe is full of creams, pinks and pastel colours! So when you’re thinking about picking up a dress that will work for you in different ways then consider what you already own. Though to be fair with this outfit, you could probably work any dress beneath it!

I chose this one because of the beautiful print, it’s velvet which is so perfect for winter and a wrapover style is pretty much perfect for any occasion. Plus it’s pink which not only means I instantly fell for it, but also I would probably wear this right through to spring.  The wrapover style means it would look great tucket into jeans or layered underneath a skirt as a top or the frill detail on the wrapper skirt would look beautiful poking out of a t skirt or knit. I chose the latter.

 THE DAY DRESS

If there’s one thing that I love and Free People are renowned for is chunky knits. No one does chunky knitwear like Free People do chunky knitwear! If you’re wearing skirt in winter then a chunky knit is 100% necessary. I picked up this giant fisherman style knit with a high neck to layer over the dress which works perfectly a it falls just above the frills. I love playing with textures in my outfits especially in winter so the velvet and knit together are ticking all of my favourite boxes!

I finished off the look with a baker boy hat . . obviously! I finally got my hands on a classic black style with braided detail, I’m in love. My Balenciaga boots which are the perfect winter addition to go with a dress and my new pink Furla bag. Outfit complete!

THE NIGHT DRESS

So the night time look is the star of the show. I really needed to look more into my winter night time outfits as I’m off to New York at the end of the week and the christmas party events are coming in thick and fast yet I stare at my wardrobe completely uninspired and always end up wearing the same leather trousers and top. I went 100% in on the pink for the night time look and I’m not even sorry about it.

I said it before and I’ll say it again, I’m all about the textures and I also love a clashing print. If you’re going head to toe in a colour then these two are vital so the satin paisley jacket and velvet floral dress are a miss match in heaven. Also can we just take a minute for how incredible this jacket’s going to look with jeans and a tee for smart casual? I told you, I never get anything for my wardrobe that’s not going to be multifunctional!

The final cherry on top is the sequin bag which is quite frankly a piece of art! I love the hoop handles and the way it swings on your arm, so pretty! Again I would wear this for a smart casual look and dress it down with jeans, I hate having things that are just for day or just for night, break the rules, wear a sequin bag for breakfast!

Which is your favourite look? Obviously I’m pretty partial to both of them but I have to say the daytime outfit is me all over. I’ve been loving wearing dresses and skirts more this year so finding ways to wear them in winter is ideal! I think the bare legs may be cold for roaming New York but you’ll catch me in this back in the UK for sure.
